Sheet vinyl and luxury vinyl tile, done properly
Vinyl and LVT are the two floors that do the hardest domestic work. Sheet vinyl gives you a continuous waterproof surface with almost no joints, which is why it still wins in bathrooms, utility rooms and busy kitchens. Luxury vinyl tile gives you the look of oak, stone or slate in a plank or tile format that is warm underfoot, quiet, and repairable one piece at a time.
Our service covers the parts that decide whether the floor looks right in five years: measuring on site, assessing and preparing the subfloor, levelling where it is needed, planning the plank or sheet layout against the room's main sightline, fitting, and finishing edges and thresholds so nothing lifts.
It suits kitchens and utility rooms where water and heat are constant; bathrooms and wet rooms; hallways that take every muddy boot in the house; open-plan spaces running through several rooms; and holiday lets or business premises that need a floor that cleans down fast between changeovers. Households with mobility aids, wheelchairs or walking frames also benefit from a smooth, level, non-catching surface.
This is a floor where preparation, not product, causes most failures. Vinyl and LVT are thin and flexible: every ridge, hollow, nail head and old adhesive ridge under them eventually shows through as a shadow or a wear line. Getting the subfloor flat, dry and sound is the difference between a floor that stays flawless and one that telegraphs every fault beneath it.
Why a failing vinyl floor gets expensive quickly
Vinyl fails at its edges and joints first. A lifted seam by a bath, a shrinking edge at the sink kickboard, or a doorbar working loose lets water underneath, and once water gets beneath a waterproof floor it has nowhere to evaporate to. It sits on the subfloor.
In a kitchen or bathroom that means chipboard swelling, timber rotting and, in the worst cases, damage to the ceiling below, a repair bill many times the price of relaying the floor while the problem is still a lifted edge.
Cosmetically, ridges and hollows in an unprepared subfloor wear through the surface layer in exactly those spots, so a floor that looked immaculate on day one develops dull lines and shiny patches along the routes people actually walk. And a hard floor with a curling edge or a proud threshold strip is a genuine trip hazard, especially for older people and anyone using a frame or a chair.
The mistakes we see most often
- Laying new vinyl straight over old, damaged or uneven flooring instead of preparing the subfloor.
- Choosing a thin wear layer for a hallway or kitchen because the pattern looked good, then wearing through it in the traffic lane.
- Ignoring damp in a solid floor before laying an impermeable covering over it.
- Skipping expansion allowance on click LVT in a sunny room, so the floor lifts or peaks.
- Sealing a bathroom badly at the perimeter, where the water actually gets in.

We measure the room, check the subfloor for damp, movement, hollows and old adhesive, and identify anything that has to be corrected before laying.

One price covering the floor, any levelling or preparation, uplift and disposal, trims and thresholds, and fitting, with credit options explained.

Preparation and levelling
Old covering lifted, subfloor cleaned, repaired, levelled or overboarded as required, so the finished floor has a sound, flat base.

Fitting and finishing
Sheet vinyl cut and bonded with joints kept away from wet zones and traffic lines, or LVT set out against the room's main sightline, then edges, trims and doorbars finished.

Vinyl and LVT: formats, wear layers and where each belongs
Vinyl covers several very different products. Choosing between them is mostly about moisture, traffic and subfloor.
Sheet vinyl (cushioned and non-cushioned)
Sheet vinyl is supplied in wide rolls and cut to the room, so a typical bathroom or utility room has no joints at all. Cushioned versions add a foam layer for warmth and softness underfoot, which suits bathrooms and kitchens; non-cushioned versions are firmer and better where furniture and appliances sit heavy.
It is the pragmatic choice wherever water is routine, and the fastest to fit with the least disruption.
Luxury vinyl tile: click and glue-down
Click LVT floats over an underlay with a perimeter expansion gap, is quick to install, and can often go over an existing sound, level hard floor. Glue-down LVT is bonded directly to a prepared subfloor, sits absolutely flat, handles heavy furniture and underfloor heating well, and gives the most convincing result in large open areas.
Which one is right depends on the subfloor condition, whether there is underfloor heating, and how much light and heat the room gets.
Wear layers and traffic grades
The wear layer is the clear top layer that takes all the abrasion, the single most useful number when comparing two LVTs that look identical. A thin wear layer is fine in a spare bedroom and a false economy in a hallway.
For halls, kitchens and any commercial or holiday-let use, we specify a heavier wear layer, because it is the part that decides whether traffic lanes appear in two years or not at all.
Subfloor preparation, damp and levelling
Timber subfloors are checked for movement, loose boards and nail heads, and are usually overboarded to give a continuous flat plane. Concrete and screed floors are checked for damp and levelled with compound where they dip or ridge.
This stage is invisible in the finished floor, which is exactly why it gets skipped by others, and why so many vinyl floors show ghosting of the boards underneath within a year.
Patterns, planks and setting out
Wood-effect planks are usually run with the length of the room or towards the main light source, which makes a space read longer and hides joint lines. Stone and tile effects can be laid square or brick-bonded, and grout-line detailing changes how formal the floor looks.
In an open-plan area we set out from the dominant sightline so that cut pieces land at the least conspicuous edges, not in the middle of the doorway you walk through most.
