Beds & Mattresses in Keith:Lie On It Before You Buy It,and Get an Honest Answer on Support
A mattress is one of the few things you use every night and one of the hardest to judge from a photograph. In our Keith showroom you can actually lie on it, in your own sleeping position, and be told plainly which one suits your back and your budget, not which one we would rather shift.

Divans, frames and mattresses chosen by lying on them
Our Keith showroom on Mid Street carries divans, bed frames and mattresses in a range of tensions, so a decision that is usually made from a photograph and a star rating can be made the sensible way: shoes off, lie down, roll over, and compare two mattresses one after the other in the same few minutes.
The service is advice as much as supply. We ask how you sleep, on your back, side or front, whether you wake with a sore lower back or shoulder, whether two people of very different weights share the bed, whether you sleep hot, and whether the room needs storage under the base. Those answers change the recommendation far more than the price does.
It is for anyone whose mattress has started to dip or has passed its useful life; couples compromising badly on a bed neither of them chose; people managing back, hip or shoulder pain who need genuine support rather than marketing language; guest rooms and holiday lets that need reliable, hard-wearing beds; and anyone furnishing a new home or new build who wants the beds sorted alongside everything else.
Getting it right professionally matters because comfort and support are two different things. A soft mattress can feel wonderful for ninety seconds in a shop and leave your spine unsupported all night, while a very firm mattress can create pressure points at the hip and shoulder for a side sleeper. Trying them properly, with someone experienced asking the right questions, is what stops an expensive mistake you then sleep on for a decade.
What a worn-out mattress is actually doing
A mattress fails gradually, which is exactly why it goes unaddressed. The fillings compress, the springs lose their response, and a hollow forms where you lie. Your spine follows that hollow every night for eight hours.
The result is rarely dramatic, it is broken sleep, morning stiffness, a lower back that takes an hour to loosen, and daytime tiredness that gets blamed on everything else in life before anyone blames the bed. Over months and years, that adds up to a real cost in energy, mood and health.
There is a hygiene dimension too: old mattresses accumulate dust and allergens that regular cleaning cannot reach, which matters for anyone with asthma or allergies. And a sagging divan base quietly destroys a new mattress laid on top of it, one of the most common ways people waste good money.
The mistakes we see most often
- Buying a mattress online from a firmness rating without ever lying on it.
- Putting a new mattress on an old, sagging base, so the new mattress inherits the fault immediately.
- Assuming firmer always means better for a bad back, a side sleeper often needs give at the hip and shoulder.
- Ignoring the fact that two people of very different weights need different support from the same bed.
- Measuring the mattress but not the staircase, landing or doorway it has to come up.
Our process
How a beds & mattresses job runs, step by step
- Step 1
Talk it through
How you sleep, what wakes you, any back, hip or shoulder pain, whether you share the bed, how hot you sleep, and whether you need storage in the base.
- Step 2
Try the beds properly
Lie on the shortlist in your normal sleeping position, for long enough to feel the difference. We will tell you honestly when the cheaper option is the right one.
- Step 3
Match the base and the frame
The right mattress on the wrong base is a wasted purchase. We check what the mattress will sit on and specify divan, sprung slats or frame accordingly, including storage drawers where the room needs them.
- Step 4
Measure the route in
Bed size, room size, and, just as important, the doorway, staircase and landing the bed has to travel through, so nothing arrives that cannot get upstairs.
- Step 5
Delivery and setup
Beds delivered and set up in the room, with the old bed and mattress dealt with so you are not left with it in the hall.
- Step 6
Settle-in advice
Straightforward guidance on turning or rotating, protecting the mattress and letting a new bed settle, so it performs the way it did in the showroom.

Mattress types, tensions and bed bases explained
The vocabulary is designed to confuse. Here is the plain version of what actually differs between beds.
Open coil, pocket sprung and pocket counts
Open coil mattresses use one connected spring unit, light, breathable and a sound choice for guest rooms and occasional use.
Pocket sprung mattresses house each spring in its own fabric pocket so they move independently. That means the mattress follows the shape of your body instead of averaging it out, and one person turning over disturbs the other far less. Higher pocket counts generally allow finer contouring, but the quality of the fillings above the springs matters just as much as the number itself.
Memory foam, latex and hybrids
Memory foam moulds to body heat and spreads pressure, which suits people with hip or shoulder pressure points, though some sleepers find it retains warmth.
Latex is more responsive and bouncier, with better airflow, and appeals to people who dislike the sinking feel of foam.
Hybrids put a foam or latex comfort layer over a pocket spring unit, aiming for spring support with foam pressure relief, a good middle ground for couples who want different things.
Tension: soft, medium and firm
Tension is not a comfort score; it is how much the mattress resists your body weight. A heavier person needs a firmer tension to get the same support a lighter person gets from a medium.
Side sleepers usually want enough give for the shoulder and hip to sink in while the waist stays supported. Back and front sleepers usually want firmer support to keep the spine from arching. Getting this wrong is the single most common cause of a mattress that 'never felt right'.
Divans, storage bases and frames
Divan bases give even, consistent support and can be ordered with drawers, the practical answer in a smaller bedroom or a cottage with limited wardrobe space.
Sprung-slat bases flex slightly with the mattress and can add a little comfort; rigid or solid-top bases feel firmer. Bed frames, wooden, upholstered or metal, change the look of the room, and slat spacing matters, since gaps that are too wide will not support a foam mattress properly.
Sizes and getting the bed into the room
Standard UK sizes run single, small double, double, king and super king. Upgrading from a double to a king is the most common improvement couples make, and it changes sleep quality more than most people expect.
The limiting factor is often not the bedroom but the route to it, narrow staircases, tight landings and old cottage doorways. We check that before ordering, and where access is difficult a divan in two halves or a frame that assembles in the room solves it.
Guest rooms, holiday lets and full properties
Guest bedrooms and holiday accommodation need beds that stay comfortable for a wide range of body types and survive frequent use, with mattress protection specified from the start.
We furnish complete properties, so beds and mattresses can be planned together with flooring, curtains, sofas and finishing touches on one project, with delivery and professional installation included and 12 months' interest-free credit available on full home furnishing projects (T&Cs apply, subject to status).
