Project-based curtains, soft furnishings and finishing touches
Curtains and accessories are the part of a room most often left until the money and the patience have run out, which is exactly why so many otherwise well-furnished houses still look unfinished. We handle this as part of a project rather than as an afterthought, coordinating the window treatments and soft furnishings with the flooring, furniture and beds so that the whole room resolves.
The service is available from both showrooms and is project-based: we look at the rooms as a set, work out what each window needs, tie the colours and textures to the carpet or LVT going down and the sofa or bed going in, and organise everything to arrive and be installed together.
It suits people who have just had new flooring or furniture and want the room finished properly; anyone moving into a new build with bare windows in every room; landlords and holiday-let owners who need every room presentable from day one; and homeowners who know what they want the room to feel like but do not want to coordinate five different suppliers to get there.
Doing it professionally matters because curtains do practical work as well as decorative work. The right heading, the right drop and enough fullness control draught, light and noise; the wrong ones hang badly, let cold in around the edges and make a good window look cheap. Getting the measurements and the specification right the first time is what stops that.
Why the unfinished room stays unfinished
Bare or ill-fitting windows undo everything else you have spent money on. A room with new flooring, a new sofa and the wrong curtains reads as unfinished, and no amount of additional furniture fixes it.
There is a practical cost as well. In a Moray winter, thin, short or narrow curtains let heat out through the glass and draught in around the edges every evening, heating you are paying for and losing. Curtains that stop above the sill or barely cover the frame lose most of their thermal benefit.
Poorly specified window treatments also fail early: not enough fullness so they never hang in proper folds, poles under-supported for the weight of the fabric, or linings that fade and disintegrate in a sunny room. It is the sort of thing that gets replaced twice.
And left to a separate shopping trip later, it usually does not happen. The room stays 'nearly done' for a couple of years, which is the most common outcome of all.
The mistakes we see most often
- Buying ready-made curtains to a nominal size without measuring the pole position and the real drop.
- Skimping on fullness, so the curtains look flat and thin however good the fabric is.
- Choosing curtain colours from a phone screen instead of against the actual flooring and upholstery.

Curtains, soft furnishings and whole-property furnishing
Window treatments and accessories are technical as well as decorative. These are the decisions that matter.
Curtain headings and how they hang
The heading sets how the curtain folds and how much fabric it needs. Pencil pleat is the traditional, adaptable choice and gathers into fine folds; eyelet headings hang in deep, even waves from a pole and suit a contemporary room; pinch pleat gives a formal, tailored fall.
Each heading needs a different fullness ratio, and skimping on fullness is the fastest way to make expensive fabric look cheap.
Linings, interlinings and thermal performance
An unlined curtain is decoration. A lined curtain traps a layer of still air against the glass and starts doing thermal work; an interlined one adds a soft layer between fabric and lining for weight, better folds and considerably better insulation and sound absorption.
Blackout linings matter in bedrooms, nurseries and holiday-let rooms, particularly during long northern summer evenings when it is still light well past bedtime.
Poles, tracks and measuring the drop
Pole or track position determines the finished look as much as the fabric. Setting a pole higher and wider than the window makes the window appear larger and lets the curtains stack clear of the glass, so you keep the daylight.
Drop is measured from the pole or track, not from the window frame, to the sill, below the sill, or to the floor. Full-length curtains generally look better and insulate better; sill-length is the practical answer above a radiator or a worktop. Heavy interlined curtains need a pole or track rated for the weight, properly fixed.
Coordinating with flooring and upholstery
The reason to buy curtains from the same place as the flooring and furniture is simple: everything can be compared side by side in real light. A curtain fabric that looks perfect on its own can fight with the undertone of a carpet or the leather on a sofa.
We work from the largest surfaces outwards, flooring first, then upholstery, then window treatments, then cushions and accessories, which is the order that produces a room that hangs together.
Accessories and the finishing touches
Cushions, throws, mirrors and the smaller pieces are what turn a correctly furnished room into a room people want to be in. They add the texture and contrast that large furniture pieces cannot.
They are also the easiest way to refresh a room later without replacing anything expensive, which is worth planning for at the outset.
