Sofa configurations, mechanisms and coverings
What separates one sofa from another is mostly the frame, the foam, the mechanism and the covering. Here is how to read them.
3+2 sets and standard sofas
A 3+2 set is the traditional arrangement and remains the most flexible: two separate pieces that can be angled to the room, moved when you redecorate and taken to a different house later.
It suits rectangular living rooms where seating faces a fireplace or television from two directions, and it is far easier to get into an awkward room than a single large piece.
Corner groups and chaise configurations
Corner groups maximise seating along two walls and are excellent in a square room or an open-plan space where the sofa also defines the edge of the living area.
The trade-off is flexibility: a corner group commits the room to one layout, and the handing, whether the corner runs left or right as you look at it, must be decided against your actual room. We work that out with you before ordering.
Manual and powered recliners
Manual recliners operate on a lever or by pushing back, are mechanically simple and need no power supply. Powered recliners move on a motor at the touch of a button, stop anywhere in the range, and are considerably easier for anyone with limited strength in the arms or shoulders.
Both need clearance: a footrest needs space in front, and unless the design is wall-hugging, the back needs space behind. Bring your room dimensions and we will confirm it fits in use, not just at rest.
Frames, foam and why sofas sag
Under the upholstery, the frame and suspension carry the load. Sagging usually starts with the suspension or with foam that has lost its resilience, not with the fabric, which is why a sofa can look presentable and be finished.
